What is FGC?

Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC) was created on 5 September 1979 as a result of the 1978 State cessions to the Generalitat, with the objective of operating public railway lines that previously belonged to FEVE in Catalonia. Thus, it became the first public company created by the first restored government of the Generalitat.

FGC is structured in two units of business: the Train Business Unit, that includes the Barcelona-Vallès and Llobregat-Anoia metropolitan lines, and the Lleida-La Pobla de Segur line, and the Tourism and Mountain Business Unit, that manages the Montserrat Operation (Montserrat rack railway and Sant Joan and Santa Cova cable cars), in addition to the mountain stations of La Molina and Vall of Núria and the Alt Llobregat Tourist Railway.
The metropolitan lines operate within Barcelona, and in the suburbs and surrounding districts. A international gauge line connects Barcelona to Sant Cugat, Terrassa and Sabadell, and another meter gauge line, links Barcelona to Martorell, Manresa and Igualada. The freight extensions provide links to the mines of Súria and Sallent, as well as the SEAT factory at Martorell and allow the connection to the Port of Barcelona.

FGC’s mission is to manage with efficiency the services and infrastructures that have assigned to it as public company with the aim of contributing to the improvement of the mobility in
Catalunya and to offer profitable leisure services to the public, in accordance with expectations.

Within the framework of this mission,
FGC must be the leading Catalan public company as a result of its constant innovation, its constant growth and its respect for the environment.
